May 26, 2011 – Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico…IAD Staff

Three students from the Ignacio Comonfort Adventist School in Cancun, Mexico, were among the winners of a reading comprehension contest for seventh to ninth graders. The students participated in a district-wide competition against 15 government schools earlier this month.

Diana Gonzalez, a ninth grader, won first place and will represent the school district in a state contest to be held on May 29, in Chetumal, Quintana Roo. Mauricio de Jesus Archundia, a seventh grader, took the third spot, and Isai Santos came in forth.

“What is significant about this win is that our students studied the bible to prepare for this competition,” said Raul Lozano, education director for the church in South Mexico. The school had received a letter of invitation to participate in the district contest that would be based on the textbook assigned by the government to its schools earlier in the year, said Lozano. “As a private school, our Adventist school did not have those textbooks to be reviewed by the students,” he said.

Maria Elena De La Rosa, the language arts teacher at Ignacio Comonfort, decided to have the selected students study the Book of Daniel.

“The results of contest prove that the bible is an important book to help develop the logic reasoning of our students helping them to be more precise in reading comprehension,” said Lozano. “It’s a benefit of Adventist education.”

“Seventh-day Adventist educational institutions integrate the bible and its teachings into the daily instructions in class, so teachers connect curricular contents with the biblical truth so that students are able to acknowledge God as the ultimate and most authorized source of knowledge,” explained Lozano. “The bible is and will continue to be the textbook of the students in our schools.”

Ignacio Comonfort is a K-12 grade school with more than 500 students.
