Fireworks lit up the Maracas Valley skyline on Thursday night, March 16, 2006 to herald the proclamation of the region’s newest university, University of the Southern Caribbean. The aerial display marked a fitting end to a ceremony full of pomp and circumstance in which the former Caribbean Union College, which has provided tertiary level education to the population of Trinidad and Tobago and beyond for the past 78 years, had its new status officially proclaimed.

His Excellency Professor George Maxwell Richards, president of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, presented the feature address at the . President Richards touted the need for the university to view itself as a key instrument of national development which should seek to help solve the nation’s problems, especially those of the underprivileged in the society.

“Emphasis should be placed on developing closer links with the outside community,” he said. He further stressed the need for the institution’s faculty and staff to place significant emphasis on applied research.

Dr. Ruby Alleyne, Executive director of the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago, delivered the Conferment of the Institutional Title to Dr. Eugene Daniel, chairman of the Board, and Dr. Trevor G. Gardner, president of the university.

The ceremony which was the climax of a week-long celebration attracted such dignitaries as The Honorable Justice Rolston Nelson, Judge of the Caribbean Court of Justice; United States Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Roy L. Austin, representatives from various high commissions and diplomatic embassies in Trinidad and Tobago, representatives from various government ministries, and officials from the accreditation Council of the island for the event.

Against a backdrop of music provided by the island’s famous Trinidad and Tobago Police Band, the evening was punctuated with tributes and celebration.

The unveiling of the new university name and logo elicited excitement from the audience. A shower of confetti was sprayed in the air as students cheered and waved their lags and drum rolls the fanfares heralded the arrival of the country’s third such institution.

The university, which has been offering a graduate program under Andrews University in the areas of business, theology and education, also attained accreditation from Andrews University and the Adventist Accreditation Association just days before USC obtained the government’s accreditation, according to Del Charles, USC’s Public Relations director.

The University of Southern Caribbean offers undergraduate and graduate to more than 1,200 students on the island and its two extension campuses in Guyana and Tobago.
