President of the Northern Caribbean University (NCU) Dr. Herbert Thompson was recognized as outstanding educator by the Joint Committee for Teacher Education (JCTE) and University Council of Jamaica (UCJ). The award was presented at their 6th Annual Quality Assurance in Tertiary Education Week Awards Ceremony on Feb. 9, at the Mona Visitor’s Lodge in St. Andrew, Jamaica.

Dr. Thompson was awarded for his strong commitment and determination in expanding tertiary education and was selected from a cadre of fellow educators, all of whom he confessed could have been presented with the award.

Dr. Ethley London, executive director of UCJ, in heaping accolades on the awardee told the audience that “Dr. Thompson’s honor is fitting at this time, as exemplified the true meaning of commitment, leadership, and determination in expanding the access to tertiary education for Jamaica and the Caribbean.”

“I am humbled and grateful that the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) saw it fitting to have recognized the worth of my work in this area of education,” said Dr. Thompson. “This award, though, is dedicated to the life and work of a father figure and mentor of mine who passed on recently; Mr. Lyndon Daley, who during my most formative years groomed me into becoming who I am today.”

Thirty-one accreditations ranging from management trainee program to masters degrees were issued to seventeen universities, colleges and institutions of higher learning. NCU with accreditations in its master of science in biology and public health was among two of the list of the seven masters accreditations issued at the function.
